Elementary Schools

Students in kindergarten - 5th grades attend one of our five elementary schools. The assignment of elementary school-age youngsters is not based on where the child lives but on the rules of the Controlled Parents" Choice Program.  While each school has a unique personality, the standards, resources, curriculum, and mix of students are the same.

Although our elementary schools each has a different theme or focus, they also have a lot in common.  In fact, more than you may think.  There are several reasons for this.

First of all, the Learning Standards from the NYS Department of Education mandate that the subjects taught to all students in the state - English Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, and Physical Education - must include certain basic concepts.

In addition, the State Education Department requires that other non-academic areas such as health, general safety (including "Good Touches - Bad Touches" and "stranger danger"), and fire and bicycle safety also be covered in the curriculum.

Our own district also requires that strict curricular (what students are taught) and instructional (how students are taught) standards be adhered to in all our schools.

Some other important things the five elementary schools have in common are listed below.
